Symmetry & Tessellations (Smart Rotational Symmetry & Laser Grid Bot)

Source:

Explore symmetry in art and nature! Place geometric tiles (Snowflake, Hexagon, Star) on a motorized rotary stage with 3 acrylic mirrors. TCS3200 color sensors scan pattern rotations, calculating Rotational Symmetry Order.

Categorisation

Props & Materials Required

  • Motorized rotary stage with stepper/DC motor
  • 3-way acrylic mirror kaleidoscope housing
  • TCS3200 RGB color sensor / Red laser line generator
  • ESP32 controller board
  • 0.96-inch OLED display screen
  • DFPlayer Mini MP3 module + 3W speaker

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Place Snowflake Tile on Stage

Place a 6-pointed snowflake tile on the motorized turntable.

2

Rotate Turntable 60 Degrees

Press 'ROTATE 60°'. Stepper motor turns stage 60°. Color sensor scans RGB pattern.

3

Detect Identical Overlay Pattern

Sensor reads 100% RGB pattern match at 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 300°, 360°!

4

Symmetry Order Output & Audio Proof

OLED displays 'Rotational Symmetry: ORDER 6 (Angle of Rotation: 60°)'. Speaker narrates symmetry in ice crystals!

Why It Works & Notes

Rotational symmetry means a shape matches its original outline multiple times during a 360° turn (e.g. Hexagon = Order 6 every 60°). Motorizing the turn while color sensors detect pattern match angles bridges art with geometry.
