Sound-Reactive Light Box

Build an interactive light display that actually 'listens' to you! Using a simple sound sensor module and LEDs, kids can create a shadow box that flashes and dances in time with music or clapping.

Props & Materials Required

  • Small cardboard shadow box
  • Tracing paper or frosted plastic (for the screen)
  • Sound sensor module (like a generic KY-037 or a plug-and-play STEM sound module)
  • Battery pack (3V or 5V, matching your sensor)
  • 1-3x bright LEDs
  • Jumper wires or alligator clips

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prep the Shadow Box

Cut a window into the front of your cardboard box and tape tracing paper over the hole to act as a diffuser screen. Inside, cut out and mount some cardboard silhouettes (like a city skyline or a forest).

Wire the Sensor

Connect your battery pack's positive (red) wire to the 'VCC' or '+' pin on the sound sensor, and the negative (black) wire to the 'GND' or '-' pin. This gives the sensor power.

Connect the Lights

Connect the long leg (+) of your LEDs to the 'OUT' or 'Signal' pin on the sound sensor. Connect the short leg (-) back to the 'GND' pin on the battery. (If using multiple LEDs, wire them in parallel).

Calibrate the Ear

Turn the battery pack on. The LEDs might stay off, or stay on constantly. Clap your hands loudly! If the light doesn't flash, use a tiny screwdriver to slowly turn the brass screw on the sensor module until clapping makes it flash.

Put on a Show

Mount the electronics inside the shadow box. Turn off the room lights, put on your favorite upbeat song, and watch your shadow box dance to the beat of the music!

Why It Works & Notes

This project introduces input/output (I/O) processing in hardware. The sound sensor acts as the 'input', translating sound waves into electrical pulses. The LEDs are the 'output', turning those electrical pulses back into visible light flashes. It perfectly demonstrates energy conversion!

Parent Note:

Very safe, no-solder project if using alligator clips or plug-and-play modules. If you use a raw KY-037 sensor, you may need a small flathead screwdriver to adjust the 'sensitivity' dial on the blue box. AI Optional: Have your child prompt an AI for 'cool geometric shadow box cutout designs' to use as a silhouette in front of the light!
