Harness the power of the sun! Build a kinetic, spinning garden ornament that automatically comes to life and rotates when placed in direct sunlight, using a small solar panel and a hobby motor.

- •Stiff plastic sheet, old CDs, or waterproof craft foam (for the spinner blades)
- •A wooden dowel or garden stake

Step-by-Step Instructions
Build the Spinner
Cut your plastic sheet or foam into a cool fan or propeller shape. If you have an old CD, you can glue foam blades onto it. This will be your spinner.
Mount the Motor
Hot glue your spinner directly onto the metal spinning shaft of the DC motor. Make sure it is perfectly centered so it doesn't wobble when it spins.
Construct the Stand
Zip tie or hot glue the DC motor securely to the top of your wooden dowel or garden stake. Make sure the spinner faces outward and can rotate freely without hitting the stick.
Wire the Sun
Mount your mini solar panel just below the motor on the wooden dowel, facing up towards the sky. Twist the red wire from the solar panel to one metal tab on the motor, and the black wire to the other tab. Secure with electrical tape.
Test in the Wild
Take your project outside and stick the dowel into the soil of a garden bed or potted plant. As soon as direct sunlight hits the solar panel, your spinner should start whirring to life!
Why It Works & Notes
This is a direct, tangible demonstration of renewable energy. Instead of a battery storing chemical energy, the solar panel converts light energy directly into electrical energy. The brighter the sun, the faster the motor spins!
Very safe, no-solder project, but it requires twisting thin wires together. Note: Solar panels need DIRECT, bright sunlight to generate enough current to spin a motor. A cloudy day or indoor lighting usually won't work!
