Props & Materials Required

  • A standard Snap Circuits kit (e.g., Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100)
  • Plastic base grid
  • Battery holder (with batteries)
  • Various snap wires
  • Speaker module (SP)
  • Alarm IC (U2) or Music IC (U1)
  • Photoresistor (RP) (Optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

The Power Station

Snap your battery holder onto the plastic grid. Snap a Slide Switch (S1) directly to the positive (+) side of the battery so you can easily turn the noise off!

Mount the Brain

Take the Alarm IC (U2) module—this is the 'brain' that makes the siren noises. Snap it into the middle of the board.

Connect the Speaker

Snap the Speaker module (SP) next to the Alarm IC. Use snap wires to connect the output of the Alarm IC to the speaker.

Complete the Loop

Use snap wires to connect the battery switch to the input of the Alarm IC, and run a wire from the other side of the speaker back to the negative (-) side of the battery.

Trigger the Alarm

Flip the switch and listen! For an extra challenge, try replacing the regular switch with a Photoresistor (RP). If you do this, the alarm will only trigger when you shine a flashlight on the board!

Why It Works & Notes

This project demonstrates how complex integrated circuits (ICs) work. An IC is like a tiny computer chip that comes pre-programmed to send a specific pulsing electrical signal to the speaker. Kids learn that electricity isn't just power—it's information.

Parent Note:

The Alarm IC can be quite loud! If your child is sensitive to noise, you can snap a resistor module into the circuit before the speaker to lower the volume.
