Pop-Up Illuminated Scene
Source: Stemoto Original

Combine paper engineering with electronics! Build a 3D pop-up card that magically lights up when you open it. This project teaches kids how to create mechanical structures out of paper and integrate a working circuit.
Categorisation
Props & Materials Required
- •Thick cardstock or construction paper
- •Copper tape (conductive adhesive)
- •3V Coin cell battery (CR2032)
- •1x 5mm LED light (any color)
- •Scissors and a glue stick
- •Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Step-by-Step Instructions
Make the Pop-Up Fold
Take a piece of cardstock and fold it in half like a greeting card. On the folded crease, cut two parallel lines about 1 inch deep. Push that cut section inside out so it pops up like a little box when the card opens.
Decorate the Scene
Draw or glue a character (like a monster or a castle) onto the front of that pop-up box. Poke a hole in the background of the card directly behind the pop-up character.
Plan the Power
Open the card flat. Mark where the battery will go in the bottom corner. Run two lines of copper tape from the battery up to the hole you poked. Be careful navigating around the pop-up folds!
Add the LED
Push the LED legs through the hole. Bend the positive leg flat against one copper track and the negative leg against the other. Tape them down firmly.
Light It Up
Place the coin cell battery on the tracks. Use a binder clip or a folded paper flap to hold the battery tight. Open your card and watch the scene pop up and glow in 3D!
Why It Works & Notes
This adds a mechanical engineering challenge to a standard paper circuit. Kids have to learn how a 'parallel fold' works to make the paper pop up in 3D when opened. Then, they must engineer their flat copper tape circuit around that 3D obstacle so the LED shines from behind the pop-up element.
Very safe, no-solder project. The trickiest part is making sure the copper tape doesn't accidentally tear when folding the card in half. AI Optional: Have your child use an AI image generator to create a 'cool monster' or 'beautiful castle' to print, cut out, and use as their pop-up center piece!
