Plant Growth Light-Up Puzzle

A multi-layered puzzle showing the plant lifecycle from seed to root, stem, leaf, and flower. As each piece is placed in the correct chronological order, copper contacts meet, finally completing the circuit to light up a 'Sun' LED at the top.

Props & Materials Required

  • Laser-cut wooden jigsaw pieces (seed, root, stem, leaf, flower, sun)
  • Simple circuit components (LEDs, coin cell battery)
  • Copper tape for contact points
  • Cardboard base board

Step-by-Step Instructions

Examine the Pieces

Spread out the laser-cut puzzle pieces. Discuss each one: What is a seed? What are roots? Why does a plant need a stem? What do leaves do? When does a flower appear?

Understand the Circuit

Show the child the copper contacts on the edges of each piece. Explain: each piece connects to the next, like links in a chain. If the chain is complete, electricity flows and the Sun lights up!

Place in Order

Starting from the bottom of the base board, place the pieces in lifecycle order: Seed → Root → Stem → Leaf → Flower. As each piece clicks in, a new copper contact is made.

Complete the Circuit

When the final piece (Flower) is placed, the full circuit from battery through all pieces to the Sun LED is complete. The Sun lights up — the plant has grown!

Scramble and Retry

Mix up the pieces. Can you do it faster this time? What happens if you put the Flower before the Root? (The circuit doesn't complete — just like in nature, the order matters!)

Why It Works & Notes

Experiential learning of natural sequences and biological processes. The circuit-completion mechanic means the puzzle isn't just about fitting shapes — it teaches chronological ordering, because the pieces must go in the RIGHT sequence for the LED to light up.
