Perimeter & Area (Smart Laser Grid Floor Mapper & Polygon Calculator)

Source:

Map classroom floor shapes! Aim a laser distance sensor at shape boundary posts (Rectangle, L-shape, Triangle). The system automatically calculates total Perimeter (cm) and Area (cm²) using unit grid square integration.

Categorisation

Props & Materials Required

  • Laser distance measurement module (VL53L0X / Ultrasonic HC-SR04)
  • 4x adjustable corner reflector boundary posts
  • ESP32 controller board
  • 16x2 LCD display screen
  • DFPlayer Mini MP3 module + 3W speaker

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Position Boundary Posts

Set 4 boundary corner posts to form a 120 cm × 80 cm rectangle.

2

Laser Scan Boundary Edges

Press 'START LASER MAPPING'. Sensor scans distance between posts: Length = 120 cm, Width = 80 cm.

3

Calculate Perimeter & Area

ESP32 computes Perimeter = 2*(120+80) = 400 cm. Area = 120 × 80 = 9,600 cm² (0.96 m²)!

4

Grid Unit Area Proof Audio

LCD displays 'P = 400 cm | A = 9600 cm²'. Speaker explains why land plots are measured in square meters!

Why It Works & Notes

Perimeter is total boundary length (L+W+L+W), while Area is total surface space enclosed (L × W). Using a laser distance meter to scan boundary posts and compute area/perimeter in real time makes mensuration geometry hands-on.
