Light-Up Glow Storybook
Source: Stemoto Original

Become a high-tech author! Write and bind a small, multi-page storybook where the cover or the final page features a magical, glowing element powered by a hidden paper circuit built right into the spine.

Props & Materials Required
- •Several sheets of printer paper & 1 sheet of thick cardstock (for the cover)
- •Copper tape (conductive adhesive)
- •3V Coin cell battery (CR2032)
- •1x 5mm LED light
- •Stapler or string (for bookbinding)
- •Clear tape and markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Bind Your Book
Fold 3-4 sheets of normal paper inside a sheet of thick cardstock. Staple them down the middle crease to create a small booklet. Write and illustrate your story on the pages!
Plan the Circuit
Decide what will light up on your front cover (e.g., a magic wand or a star). Poke a hole there. The battery will live hidden on the inside of the back cover.
Cross the Spine
Open the book flat. Run two separate lines of copper tape from the inside back cover, carefully across the stapled spine, all the way to the inside of the front cover where the hole is. Make sure the tape lies flat so it doesn't tear when the book opens and closes.
Attach the LED
Push the LED legs through the hole from the outside of the front cover to the inside. Tape the long leg to your positive copper line and the short leg to the negative line.
Create the Switch
On the inside back cover, tape down the battery. Fold a small flap of extra cardstock over the battery with copper tape on it to act as an on/off switch (use a paperclip to hold it closed). Close the book and watch the cover glow!
Why It Works & Notes
This project introduces simple bookbinding and advanced circuit planning. By putting the battery in the thick back cover and the LED on the front cover, kids learn how to route electricity across moving parts (the spine of the book) without breaking the circuit.
Very safe, no-solder project. The trickiest part is ensuring the copper tape doesn't snap when crossing the book's spine. AI Optional: Have your child use an AI text generator to write a short 4-page fairytale about a glowing firefly or a magic wand to illustrate!
