Interactive Family & Relationships Tree

A physical family tree board where children wire relationships together using Snap Circuits. When the correct relationships are connected (e.g., Mother and Father to Child), the circuit closes and lights up an LED inside a laser-cut house.

Props & Materials Required

  • Snap Circuits kit
  • Custom laser-cut photo frame board
  • LEDs
  • Small photos or drawn portraits of family members
  • Copper tape for connections

Step-by-Step Instructions

Design the Family Tree

Draw or print small portraits of family members. Arrange them on the laser-cut board in a tree structure — grandparents at the top, parents in the middle, children at the bottom.

Add Conductive Paths

Using copper tape, create connection paths between related family members. Leave gaps that need to be 'bridged' with Snap Circuit connectors.

Wire the House LED

Place a small LED inside the laser-cut house at the center of the tree. Connect the LED to a battery, but leave the circuit incomplete.

Connect the Family

The child must use Snap Circuit connectors to bridge the correct relationships (Mother to Father, Parents to Child). When all connections are correct, the circuit closes and the house lights up!

Discuss and Extend

Talk about different family structures. Add aunts, uncles, cousins. What happens if one connection is missing — does the light still work? Relate this to how real circuits need every connection.

Why It Works & Notes

Play-based exploration of social structures meets an early introduction to electrical conductivity. Children learn that just as family members are 'connected,' wires must be connected for electricity to flow — making the abstract concept of circuits personally meaningful.
