How Many Times? (Smart Egg-Carton Grouping & Arrays)

Source:

Use an egg carton with IR sensors in each slot to explore equal groups. The system tracks how many marbles are in each cup and narrates the multiplication sentence.

Categorisation

Props & Materials Required

  • Empty 12-slot cardboard egg carton
  • Marbles, pom-poms, or rajma seeds (24 items)
  • Chalk or paper labels

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Drop Marbles into Slots

Place 2 marbles in the first cup, 2 in the second, 2 in the third. IR sensors detect each marble dropped.

2

Smart Count

Speaker narrates live: 'Cup 1: two. Cup 2: two. Cup 3: two. That's 3 groups of 2!'

3

Multiplication Announcement

Speaker completes: '2 plus 2 plus 2 equals 6! Three times two is six!' Display shows '3 × 2 = 6'.

4

Regroup Challenge

Redistribute 12 marbles into 4 cups with 3 each. Speaker confirms: '4 times 3 equals 12!'

Why It Works & Notes

Multiplication is fundamentally repeated addition of equal groups. IR sensors in each cup provide instant feedback as children explore different groupings.
