Props & Materials Required
- •Plastic coat hanger or balance beam
- •Two identical cups with string handles
- •Large wooden beads or marbles (20 items)
- •Number cards 1-9 and '+' / '-' / '=' symbols
Step-by-Step Instructions
Setup the Smart Balance
Hang the balance with sensor cups on a stand. The display reads '0 + 0 = 0'.
Addition Action
Drop 3 beads into the left cup. Speaker says 'Three!' Drop 4 more. Speaker says 'Three plus four equals... seven!'
Subtraction Takeaway
Place 6 beads in the cup. Remove 2. Speaker narrates: 'Six take away two equals... four!'
Equilibrium Challenge
Put 5 beads in the left cup. The speaker asks: 'How many beads for the right cup to make it balance?' Child adds beads until the tilt sensor reports level.
Why It Works & Notes
Addition is combining groups; subtraction is taking away. Sensor-equipped cups give immediate audio narration of the equation as the child physically adds or removes beads.
