Step-by-Step Instructions

Place Irregular Fabric Patch

Place an irregular leaf-shaped fabric patch on the 1-cm grid lightbox.

Optical Grid Scan

Light sensors scan grid squares covered by fabric.

Count Full & Half Squares

Controller counts: 18 Full Squares + 6 Half Squares (3) = 21 sq cm total.

Area Result & Quilt Assembly

OLED displays 'Estimated Patch Area: 21 sq cm'. Speaker celebrates: 'Quilt patch area verified! Sew into Grandmother's Quilt!'

Why It Works & Notes

Grandmother's Quilt teaches finding the area of irregular non-rectangular shapes by counting full squares, half squares (>1/2 = 1, <1/2 = 0). Using an optical grid scanner turns grid square estimation into computer vision math.
