Smart Germination Monitoring Station
Source:
Sprout seeds in a clear container with a soil moisture sensor and light sensor. The micro:bit displays a smiley when conditions are good and a sad face when the plant needs water.

Props & Materials Required
- •Clear ziplock bag or clear plastic cup
- •Cotton balls or paper towels
- •Moong/rajma seeds (soaked overnight)
- •Water spray bottle
- •Magnifying glass & observation diary
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the Sprout Station
Moisten cotton balls, place 3-4 soaked moong seeds, and position the soil moisture sensor probe in the cotton.
Check the Smart Display
The micro:bit shows a smiley face (😊) when moisture is good. When the cotton dries out, it shows a sad face (😢) and the speaker says: 'Your plant is thirsty! Please spray water!'
Daily Observation
Day 2: Root emerges! Day 4: Green shoot appears! Day 6: Tiny leaves unfold! The light sensor confirms the plant is getting enough sunlight.
Growth Diary with Data
Record daily drawings AND sensor readings (moisture level, light level) in the sprout diary. Compare: 'Day 3 was cloudy (low light) — the shoot grew slower!'
Why It Works & Notes
Soil hides root growth. A transparent container lets children witness germination while smart sensors teach them that plants need measurable amounts of water and light — turning care into data-driven observation.
