Flexible Straw Bridge Sculpture

Become a structural engineer! Using plastic straws and paperclip connectors (or a Strawbees kit), kids must design and build a bridge that can support the weight of heavy books without collapsing.

Props & Materials Required

  • A large box of plastic or paper straws
  • Connectors (Strawbees kit, OR simply fold paperclips into T-shapes to connect straws)
  • Scissors
  • Two chairs (to act as the chasm)
  • Books or heavy objects (for testing)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Understand the Triangle

Connect four straws into a square and push on one corner. Watch it collapse into a diamond. Now connect three straws into a triangle and push on it. It holds its shape! Triangles are the secret to strong bridges.

Design the Base

Set two chairs about a foot apart. Using your straws and connectors, build a flat roadway that can span the gap between the chairs.

Build the Trusses

A flat road will bend and break under weight. Build a framework of triangles (trusses) above or below your flat roadway to give it structural integrity.

Connect the Structure

Use your connectors to firmly attach all the triangular trusses to the flat roadway. Ensure every joint is secure.

The Weight Test

Place your bridge across the chairs. Carefully place a book on top of it. Does it hold? Add another! Identify which joint breaks first, reinforce it with more triangles, and try again!

Why It Works & Notes

This project teaches load distribution and structural geometry. Kids quickly learn that squares fold and collapse under weight, but triangles (trusses) distribute weight evenly and hold their shape perfectly.

Parent Note:

If you don't have a commercial Strawbees kit, you can easily make connectors by snipping straws in half and folding them, or by using pipe cleaners to lash the joints together.
