Smart LED Traffic Light & Road Safety Simulator

Source:

Build a real LED traffic light with 3 high-brightness LEDs (Red, Yellow, Green) on a cardboard post. An ESP32 controller cycles through signal phases with realistic timing and sound effects.

Categorisation

Props & Materials Required

  • Black cardboard post with 3 LED mounts
  • 3x high-brightness LEDs (Red, Yellow, Green)
  • Floor chalk or masking tape zebra crossing mat
  • Toy cars

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Assemble the LED Traffic Light

Mount 3 LEDs (Red, Yellow, Green) into holes on the black cardboard post. Connect them to the ESP32 controller (pre-wired by facilitator).

2

Watch the Signal Cycle

Press the start button. Red LED glows for 5 seconds → Yellow for 2 seconds → Green for 5 seconds. Speaker plays car engine sounds during green and a beep during pedestrian crossing.

3

Pedestrian Crossing Simulation

When the signal turns Red (for cars), the pedestrian speaker beeps rapidly. Children walk across the floor zebra crossing safely.

4

Emergency Override

Press the 'Emergency' button — all lights flash Red and a siren sound plays. Speaker: 'Emergency vehicle approaching! All traffic STOP!'

Why It Works & Notes

A REAL working electronic traffic light is dramatically more engaging than a paper slider. The automatic cycling and pedestrian beep sounds mirror actual road signals children see daily.
