Cardboard Light Sculpture

Construct a towering, abstract 3D sculpture out of slotted cardboard pieces, and bring it to life by threading glowing LED lights throughout its structure. This project blends architectural engineering with electrical art.

- •Thick cardboard pieces (recycled boxes work great!)
- •Copper tape (conductive adhesive)
- •3V Coin cell battery (CR2032)
- •2-3x 5mm LED lights (any color)
- •Scissors or a craft knife
- •Markers or paint for decorating
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cut the Shapes
Cut out 4 or 5 interesting shapes from your cardboard (squares, triangles, organic blobs). Paint or color them however you like.
Slot Construction
Cut a 1-inch slit into the edge of two different shapes. Slide the slits together to interlock the pieces. They should now stand up in 3D! Keep adding pieces until you have a cool, sturdy sculpture.
Plan the Power Grid
Decide where you want your LEDs to shine from (maybe the very top of the sculpture?). Mark where your battery will hide at the bottom base of the sculpture.
Route the Copper Tape
Run two parallel lines of copper tape from the bottom battery location all the way up the cardboard structure to the LED spots. If the tape needs to cross a 'slot' joint, make sure it stays securely connected across the gap.
Light it Up
Tape the LED legs to the top of the copper tracks (remembering polarity). Place the coin cell battery at the bottom tracks. Use a binder clip to hold the battery tight, and watch your 3D architecture glow!
Why It Works & Notes
This project forces kids to think in 3D. Instead of taping a flat circuit on a piece of paper, they have to engineer how a conductive copper path can travel UP a standing cardboard wall and connect across intersecting structural pieces without breaking the circuit.
Very safe, no-solder project. The trick to 'slotted' cardboard construction is cutting a slit halfway through two pieces of cardboard and sliding them together so they stand up on their own without glue! AI Optional: Have your child use an AI image generator to brainstorm 'futuristic glowing skyscrapers' or 'abstract 3D art' for structural inspiration.
