Construct a physical diorama of a forest or ocean. Wire up a Snap Circuit button so that when a specific animal is placed in its correct habitat, it triggers a corresponding environmental effect — like flashing a blue LED for water or playing a sound module.

Props & Materials Required

  • Snap Circuits kit (with sound and light modules)
  • Shoe box or cardboard box
  • Crafting materials (paint, paper, cotton, sand)
  • Small toy animals or paper cutouts
  • LEDs (blue for water, green for forest)
  • Push buttons or pressure switches

Step-by-Step Instructions

Build the Habitats

Divide a shoe box into sections. Paint one section blue with cotton clouds for ocean, one green with paper trees for forest, and one yellow with sand for desert.

Wire the Effects

Using Snap Circuits, place a blue LED in the ocean section connected to a pressure switch. Place a green LED in the forest section with its own switch. Place a sound module in the desert section.

Create Animal Tokens

Make or find small animal figures: fish, parrot, camel, dolphin, monkey, snake. Each animal belongs to a specific habitat.

Match and Trigger

When the child places a fish on the ocean pressure switch — the blue LED lights up! When they place a monkey in the forest — the green LED activates! Correct placement triggers the effect.

Discuss and Challenge

What about animals that live in multiple habitats? Where does a frog go — water or land? Discuss amphibians and adaptation. Add a 'wetland' section for bonus complexity!

Why It Works & Notes

Constructivist learning where children build their own miniature ecosystems. The electronic feedback makes the classification tangible — placing a fish in the ocean lights up a blue LED, but placing it in the desert triggers nothing, reinforcing habitat matching through cause-and-effect.
