Algebraic Thinking (Smart Dual Load Cell Algebraic Equation Balance)
Source:
Solve for X physically! Place 'mystery weight' boxes labeled 'X' and unit weights on a dual load cell scale balance. The system checks equality (Left Pan = Right Pan) and guides step-by-step algebraic equation solving on screen.
Categorisation
Props & Materials Required
- •Physical balance scale pans mounted on load cells
- •Mystery mass boxes labeled 'X' (containing hidden internal weights)
- •Standard 1-gram and 5-gram metal unit weights
- •Dual HX711 load cell weight sensors
- •ESP32 controller board with 0.96-inch OLED screen
- •DFPlayer Mini MP3 module + 3W speaker
Step-by-Step Instructions
Set Up Equation 2x + 3 = 11
Place 2 'X' boxes + 3 unit weights on Left Pan, and 11 unit weights on Right Pan.
Scale Balance Check
Dual load cells detect equal weight! Balance stays perfectly level.
Subtract 3 Units from Both Sides
Remove 3 unit weights from Left Pan and 3 from Right Pan. OLED updates: '2x = 8'.
Divide by 2 to Solve for X
Divide remaining weights by 2. OLED displays 'x = 4 grams!'. Speaker confirms algebraic solution!
Why It Works & Notes
Algebra equations are balance scales: whatever you do to the left side (subtract 3), you MUST do to the right side to keep it balanced. Physically balancing load scale pans to isolate 'X' makes abstract algebra intuitive.
